Spelldancer; The Wars of Magic.

Golgord, Walperg of the Sh’kti Goblins plucked the arrow from his thigh, cursing the Elven archers on the enemy’s right flank.  About ten minutes ago some one had claimed to have spotted cavalry banners and his heavy infantry had formed into rally squares to repel them. In retrospect it had been a mistake, as the elves on the hill had been raining arrows down on the stationary troops ever since, and his advance had ground to a halt.

“HOW YEE! Slick-ticky or whatever you’re called.  Get your damn squeakers over to that copse of trees and see if you can get close enough to the pointy-lugs to get a few sticks in ‘em.  NOW!”

Mumbling under his breath and scratching his muzzle with his front claw, S’zzick Tik the Rodlin scampered to where his nervous rat-men waited.  Each armed only with bows and light armour and a long knife, the thought of the heavy cavalry the enemy had lurking out there somewhere was having a devastating effect on their morale.  Nonetheless, at their master’s order they shuffled clumsily into marching column and set off towards the trees at the scamper.

If they could get to the trees before the enemy cavalry caught them, they could get to within arrow range of the exposed elven longbow troops stationed on the hill.

They were about twenty metres from the tree line when the enemy’s cavalry thundered into view from behind a hill.  Panic began to spread through the Rodlin column, until Walperg Golgord’s shield wall slammed round to face the cavalry with incredible speed and discipline.  Not a single one of the green skinned Goblin soldiers missed a step as they turned as one, threatening the flank of the onrushing cavalry, should they go after S’zzick Tik’s troops.  Unsurprisingly the mounted ape-sons shied away, and cantered back to the safety of their hill, to the jeers of the Goblin heavy infantry and the relief of the Roblin levies.

Hissing with relief the Rat-man ordered his Rodlin forward at the double.  The column collapsed into chaos as his less disciplined skirmishers took off at various speeds, desperate to reach the safety of the woods before anything else went wrong.

Something moved in the trees.  Too late, S’zzick Tik spotted something with green eyes and fur lurking in the copse. Or rather, a lot of something’s.

“NOW!” Ba’althazar One-Fang hissed at his Felixiads as the disorganised Rodlin mob reached the tree line. The cat-men of Ba’althazar’s Pride had been lying in wait all morning.  With a hiss like a geyser, over a hundred of Ba’althazar’s best warriors sprang from the bushes and dropped from the trees to fall upon the panicking foe.

“That’s the squeakers finished then!” a Goblin snarled at Walperg Golgord’s shoulder as they watched the carnage, powerless to prevent it.  It was over as quickly as it began.  Nothing was left of the Rodlin column save dismembered limbs and eviscerated corpses.

“Cats!” Golgord spat, “and people call us savages!”
